Kapusta, Selyodka, Kartoshka

Herring the Russian way, handmade sauerkraut, and just a plain boiled potato, and a couple of tomato slices, YUM!
These are some of my comfort foods.  My husband bought the herring whole, cleaned it, sliced it and put it in a glass jar with olive oil and onions.  I was so proud of myself for making the sauerkraut, Russian style, like my father used to.  First we cut up one cabbage and shredded some carrots, put one and a half tablespoon of sea salt, and then I kneaded it and squeezed the juice out, and let it sit in room temperature with a press on it for four days, then refrigirate, heaven.

My other comfort foods are kasha, buckwheat, I like it for breakfast with cottage cheese, and so do my kids.  I also love soups that my mother made, and her borscht is vegetarian with cabbage and lots of other vegetables, we love to eat it with sour cream, double yum.

I am so blessed that my husband is such an excellent cook, he also makes Plov, which is chicken and rice, some make it with lamb, and stuffed peppers and cabbage.  We both love all kinds of food, I love ethnic food, and sometimes experiment, find a good recipe, he always seasons everything I make, he just has the feel for food.

Below is a hilarious video of a variety of the weirdest Russian food, the first one I love, but the others I was never really into, especially now since I keep Kosher.

Enjoy!
