Orange Juice
I do not have too many childhood memories, but Orange Juice always sticks out. I know its pure sugar, and its much healthier to eat an orange, but once in a while I indulge in a cup and a smile always crosses my face. When we immigrated from Russia in 1980, my parents worked very hard, Thank God my brother and I had everything we ever wanted, except for orange juice, it was more expensive than other things, so it was a rare treat when we would have it. It is amazing it still makes me smile today, and tastes sooooo good.
Today with most Jews all over the world I fasted from last night until tonight, and overall it was fine, it wasn't as hot as I thought it would be. I watched the kids at our synagogue the first half of the day, and then went to visit friends, walking to a few homes the second half of the day. I like keeping busy, it keeps my mind off the fasting. This desert heat and winds makes everything dry, my nose, my throat, my scalp, and my skin. I didn't really feel thirsty, just dry, but I did not really need anything at any moment, feels good that I did it.
We were back at the synagogue at the end of the fast to hear the last blow of the shofar and then eat some fruit and sweets, and have a drink. I had some water first, then a brownie, then some watermelon, then some ice tea, and finished off with some apple juice. When I got home, I was craving orange juice, and it just brought me back to when I was a kid, it tasted sooooo good.
We are in the middle of Jewish Holiday Season, and it is not over yet, next week starts the last round of Holidays, Sukkot, where we get to eat all our meals in a little hut, and I love seeing them all around my Jewish "hood." Here are a few Sukkot facts, http://www.jewfaq.org/holiday5.htm.
Hope Everyone Is Having A Wonderful Weekend,
Feel Good,
Coach Yulia
